78,000 footsteps through the middle of the night, wearing just a pair of shorts and a decorated bra, and Jodie Humphries, service team leader for WLMG in Hanwell, had walked 26.2 miles and raised nearly £1000 for the fight against breast cancer.

25-year-old Jodie took part in The Playtex MoonWalk 2006 on the night of Saturday 20th May. She was joined by her friend Helen Walker and Helen’s Mum, Kathy, and together they raised over £1500. The dedicated trio started their walk at 11.35pm and crossed the finish line just before 8am on the Sunday morning.

This was the 9th year The Playtex MoonWalk has been held in London and an incredible 15,000 people took part. Preparing for such a marathon requires commitment, dedication and a lot of training. Jodie started power walking in January and gradually built up her distance to 20 miles prior to the big day.

If her stamina ever waned, Jodie reminded herself why she was doing the walk and that renewed her will power to push on with the training. Regrettably, her Nan died of breast cancer and her Aunt is in remission for the second time so these close relatives remained her focus and reason for taking part.

Jodie had this to say about her experience on the night: “The MoonWalk was such an amazing event to be a part of. There was a real buzz among all the walkers and everything was very well organised. We all took part in a warm-up session before setting off and then were split into four groups to stagger the start.

“I started at a good pace and power-walked four miles an hour for the first few hours but after 18 miles, I hit a mental brick wall and wondered if I could keep going. I just had to keep telling myself why I was there and that I would make it to the finish line. I’m so glad I pushed through that wall!”

At the end of the walk, Jodie, Helen and Kathy each received a medal and a bag of goodies for taking part. They’re now resting their feet, collecting sponsorship money and thinking about whether to register for next year’s Moon Walk!
